WORLD HISTORY 9 STUDENT/PARENT INFORMATION
Welcome to World History 9. Let me state this clearly from the start, this IS a high school class and you must pass each semester independently in order to graduate. In other words, when you pass the first semester you will receive one half credit and another half credit when you pass the second semester. Both of these half credits are needed to graduate.
World History 9 is a survey class of the major political, military, economic, social and cultural events of the past five hundred years. I intend for this class to be a solid foundation for future history classes, as well as, provide study skills necessary for ongoing success.
Materials Needed: Notebook with Loose-leaf paper
One single subject spiral notebook
Black/Blue pen or pencil
Color Pencils
Highlighter
* If you do not bring your materials everyday, you will risk a zero for not being prepared.
Grading/Grades:
All grading is done using the point system. Each assignment will be given a point value. To average grades you must divide the total points you have earned by the total number of points possible. I will regularly update you with current grades, but you are also expected to keep a record of your grades. A variety of work will be assigned most will be graded, some wont. You are expected to do all work assigned. Graded assignments include tests, quizzes, notes guides, current events, readings, projects, maps, etc. Unless stated otherwise, all work that is handed in is to be completed using complete sentences. Half credit will be given to any assignment handed in without complete sentences.
Notes Guides:
The majority of the time homework will be to complete a notes
guide. In order to be ready to discuss the days lesson you are required to
complete all notes guides. Notes guides are available at the start of each
chapter. If you have Internet access, go to my assignment page and print out
the notes guide. If you do not have Internet access, a listing of the notes
guide will be provided for you. I recommend you print the notes guide off the
web page. The fill-in version on the web seems to go more quickly and there is
less of a chance of skipping information. If you print in the library you will
have to pay for each page. So if you dont have web access I suggest you find a
friend that does.
You will be graded on every notes guide assigned. All of the
notes guide grades for a chapter will be added together and you will receive one
cumulative grade for the 4-8 notes guides per chapter. These are your
notes; they should be specific, but brief. You should not use complete
sentences, and abbreviations are encouraged.
Current Events:
Every Friday a current event is due. You must read an article from a reputable newspaper or online news source. After reading the article, you must answer: Who, What, Where, When and Why. Your answers must completely summarize the article you just read. You must cut out or print your article and staple them together before you hand it in on Friday. The topic of your article must be on the Current Event topic board; unapproved article topics will receive a zero. An example Current Event is posted in the classroom. You cannot print in Mr. Cobbs room and you must pay for any articles printed in the LMC. Also you cannot use the LMC Friday mornings to get an article.
Dauphin Dailies/AHSGE Review:
Dauphin Dailies or Alabama High School Graduation Exam (AHSGE) Review work will be completed nearly everyday. All of this work is to be done in the spiral notebook. You are to keep this notebook and use it to review for your AHSGE in Social Studies, to be taken in March of your sophomore year. You will be quizzed on this material, sometimes without advanced notice.
Assignments are posted weekly on the board, as well as, on the website. A full listing of assignments for the year is also posted on the bulletin board, and is updated weekly. If you are absent you must look up the assignments that you missed. You have one week to make up work - no excuses will be accepted. The only exception will be an extended absence, in that case, see me to set up a make-up schedule. I will not remind you of make-up work, you are responsible for yourself and your grade.
You are allowed to use two passes each Nine Weeks to go to your locker, use the restroom, etc. You are to sign out on the Pass Sheet for your period near the door. For each pass you do not use, you will be given 10 bonus points added to your earned points at the end of the Nine Weeks. At the start of a new Nine Weeks, new Pass Sheets will be posted and passes start all over again. This is the only bonus you will be able to receive so use your passes wisely!
